The Panthers Women’s team marked a historic milestone with a triumphant debut in the opening round of the 2025 NSW Women’s Premiership, defeating the Central Coast Roosters 22-14. In what was a highly anticipated inaugural match for the club’s women’s side, the team demonstrated determination, unity, and strong individual efforts to come away with the win.
Under the guidance of head coach Karen Stuart, the Panthers showcased a cohesive and disciplined performance, setting the tone for their campaign. Right from kickoff, the players appeared focused and well-prepared, combining solid teamwork with flashes of individual brilliance. Their ability to remain composed under pressure was a key factor in their Round 1 victory.
History was made in the 21st minute when hooker Gisele Masun-Feleti crossed the line for the Panthers’ first-ever try in the women’s competition. Her effort energized the side and gave fans their first glimpse of what this new team is capable of. Not long after, five-eighth Claudia Bush produced a dazzling solo run to notch the team’s second try. Her performance throughout the match was instrumental, not only adding points on the board with her try and three successful conversions, but also directing play with confidence and precision.
In the second half, the Panthers continued to press forward with intensity. Prop Danica Talitonu made a strong impact when she surged through defenders to score, giving the Panthers the lead and momentum heading into the final stages. The game was ultimately sealed by winger Abigayle Sekitoga, who found space down the flank in the 64th minute and grounded the ball to secure the result. Her try ensured that the Roosters couldn’t mount a comeback, and the Panthers closed out the match with an eight-point margin.
The final whistle confirmed a 22-14 victory for the Panthers, who will take immense confidence from their debut outing. Alongside the try scorers, several players stood out with solid contributions across the field. Captain Kahu Cassidy led from the front with composed leadership, while fullback Brooke Wilkins provided stability at the back. The forward pack, including Loreen Luamanuvae, Harmony Covacich, and Abbie Grant, laid a strong platform with tough carries and resolute defense.
The squad for this historic match featured a balanced mix of youth and experience: Wilkins, Tui, Fusi, Webb, Sekitoga, Bush, Pallisier, Talitonu, Masun-Feleti, Luamanuvae, Grant, Covacich, and Cassidy in the starting lineup, supported by Eden, Patu, Epati, De Bruine, and Gunton off the bench. Each player played their role in a confident and promising start to the season.
