San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t hold back after his team’s 24-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, a game decided by a dramatic 13-yard rushing touchdown by Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith with just 12 seconds left. The defeat dropped the 49ers to 5-5, leaving them tied with the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle in the NFC West standings.
While the defense held Seattle to just 289 yards, the 49ers’ offense struggled, managing only 275 yards and failing to capitalize on key opportunities. Shanahan expressed his frustration:
> “We had every opportunity to run with that and put it away. Thought the defense did a bunch of that, especially getting that turnover in the third quarter. Felt real good about going in and scoring, and we couldn’t overcome the penalties. It happened on two of our drives that cost us points, I think.”
Injuries have plagued the 49ers throughout the season, with Brandon Aiyuk out for the year, Christian McCaffrey missing time, and George Kittle sidelined against Seattle. Despite these setbacks, expectations remain sky-high for a team that entered the season as NFC favorites.
The NFC West race is now wide open, with all four teams separated by just one game. The Rams, who defeated San Francisco earlier this season, will face their divisional rivals again on Dec. 12 in a game that could determine playoff hopes.
