Red Sox Ace Reveals Max Fried’s $218M Yankees Deal Came with a Personal Heads-Up
In one of the biggest moves of the MLB offseason, pitcher Max Fried signed an eight-year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees, leaving the Atlanta Braves after a stellar career. While the deal sent shockwaves through the league, Fried made sure to personally inform his close friend, Red Sox ace Lucas Giolito, before the news went public.
Speaking on the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast, Giolito shared his appreciation for Fried’s gesture, revealing their candid conversation:
“He gave me a call immediately. Like, before anything went public. I appreciate that he did that for sure… You can’t blame him for his decision. He made the best decision for him, his family. He is going to a great organization so, good for him.”
Despite Giolito’s efforts to bring Fried to Boston, the left-handed ace ultimately chose New York, a decision Giolito admitted was impossible to argue against given the Yankees’ offer.
Fried’s Journey to Stardom
Originally drafted by the Houston Astros in 2012, Fried became a cornerstone for the Braves after being traded and debuting in 2017. Over his career, he has earned two All-Star appearances, a World Series title, and multiple individual accolades, cementing his reputation as one of the top pitchers in baseball.
The move to the Yankees pairs Fried with Gerrit Cole, forming one of the most formidable rotations in the MLB. At his introductory press conference, Fried expressed his excitement:
“He’s one of the best pitchers of the generation… For me to be able to be in a rotation [with him], be able to pick his brain a little bit, I feel there’s only going to be benefits.”
Yankees Bolster Their Roster for 2025
Fried’s signing caps an active offseason for the Yankees, who have made significant moves to strengthen their rotation and lineup. With Fried and Cole leading the way, the Yankees are emerging as early favorites in the AL East and strong contenders for a deep playoff run.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have had to pivot, acquiring Walker Buehler and trading for Garret Crochet to replenish their pitching staff. Giolito praised the team’s moves but acknowledged Fried’s absence as a missed opportunity.
As the rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox intensifies, fans can look forward to thrilling matchups in the upcoming season, with Fried’s first appearance in Yankee pinstripes against Boston sure to be a must-watch event.
