SEC SHAKEUP: Arkansas Sweeps Texas to Reclaim No. 1 Spot—Razorbacks Humble Longhorns in Baum-Walker Beatdown… But Van Horn Issues Cautionary Warning…

As the 12th week of the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball season wraps up, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) standings are shifting dramatically. With postseason implications on the horizon, every game now carries extra weight. Teams are not only battling to secure tournament spots but are also striving to host regionals—a critical advantage in college baseball.

At the center of the action is Arkansas, which reclaimed its dominance in the SEC by sweeping top-ranked Texas in a thrilling home series at Baum-Walker Stadium. The Razorbacks and Longhorns exchanged positions at first and second place in the Week 12 SEC Power Rankings following the head-to-head matchup.

Before their weekend clash, Texas earned a comfortable 11-2 victory over Prairie View A&M at home. Meanwhile, Arkansas had its scheduled midweek matchup against Missouri State canceled due to inclement weather in Springfield, Missouri.

When the Razorbacks finally hit the field on Thursday, they made a statement with a 9-0 shutout in the series opener, led by a masterful performance from pitcher Zach Root. On Friday, Arkansas clinched the series with a 6-1 victory, once again fueled by dominant pitching. The Saturday finale shifted from pitching to slugging, with Arkansas outlasting Texas 13-8. Reese Robinett emerged as the offensive hero, crushing two home runs and driving in six runs—helping Arkansas secure its first sweep of a No. 1-ranked team since 2001.

Elsewhere in the conference, LSU and Tennessee held firm in third and fourth place, respectively. LSU kicked off its week with a commanding 15-2 win over Southeastern Louisiana. However, their weekend series against Texas A&M was impacted by weather, forcing a Saturday doubleheader. The Aggies took Game 1 with a 3-1 win behind strong pitching, but LSU responded in Game 2 with a 2-1 victory thanks to a complete game from Anthony Eyanson. On Sunday, LSU entered the eighth inning with a 4-2 lead, but Texas A&M rallied for four runs to snatch the series with a 6-4 win.

Tennessee began its week with a hard-fought 7-5 win over Northern Kentucky. Hosting Auburn for the weekend, the Vols stumbled on Friday with a 6-1 loss. Saturday brought a thrilling 11-inning contest, with Tennessee walking off 5-4 courtesy of a pinch-hit RBI single by Chris Newstrom. However, Auburn took the rubber match on Sunday with an 8-1 victory in a shortened seven-inning contest.

In fifth place, Vanderbilt leapfrogged Ole Miss after a dramatic weekend. The Commodores downed Indiana State 5-2 midweek before demolishing Alabama 12-2 in Friday’s series opener. Although the Crimson Tide bounced back Saturday with a 5-2 win, Vanderbilt mounted a stunning Sunday comeback. Trailing 7-2 in the eighth, the Commodores scored three runs, tied the game in the ninth on a clutch double by Brodie Johnston, and walked it off with a two-run homer from Braden Holcomb.

Ole Miss, now sixth, began with a 6-3 win over Austin Peay but struggled against Oklahoma. The Rebels dropped the first two games of the series—2-0 and 5-3—before salvaging the finale 7-3. Despite the victory, the Rebels are in need of consistency as the postseason nears.

Georgia and Alabama exchanged places in the standings. Georgia began with a 9-2 win over Kennesaw State before sweeping Missouri on the road. The Bulldogs won 9-2 on Friday, came from behind for a 5-2 win Saturday, and scored two in the ninth on Sunday to break a tie and win 4-2.

Alabama, meanwhile, dropped two of three to Vanderbilt despite leading late in Sunday’s finale.

Ninth and 10th place remained unchanged, with Auburn and Oklahoma holding steady. Auburn not only took the series against Tennessee but also blanked Samford 3-0 in midweek play. Oklahoma had its Tuesday game canceled due to weather but beat Ole Miss in two of three games at home.

Florida, Texas A&M, and Mississippi State each climbed one spot to 11th, 12th, and 13th. The Gators traveled to South Carolina and won the series with three strong performances, including a jaw-dropping 22-3 win sparked by an 11-run ninth inning. They capped off the sweep with an 8-0 shutout on Sunday.

Texas A&M started the week with a 13-6 win over Lamar and then took two of three from LSU in their impactful series.

Mississippi State opened its week with an 18-5 thrashing of Memphis and then swept Kentucky at home. The Bulldogs won by run-rule on Friday (14-4), walked it off 6-5 in 11 innings on Saturday, and wrapped things up with a 6-1 win on Sunday.

Kentucky slid three places to 14th following the sweep. Their week began with a 6-4 loss to Western Kentucky and ended with three consecutive defeats in Starkville.

South Carolina stayed in 15th after a tough week. They managed a 5-3 win over Charleston Southern but were outmatched and swept at home by Florida.

Missouri remained firmly at the bottom, still winless in SEC play at 0-24. The Tigers lost 9-3 to Kansas midweek before being swept by Georgia.
