Hockey Community in Mourning: Beloved Member’s Tragic Death Shocks Fans and Players Alike

The hockey world is mourning the loss of veteran sportswriter Bruce McCurdy, who passed away following a medical emergency. McCurdy, known for his extensive coverage of the Edmonton Oilers, was a respected figure in the sports journalism community, contributing regularly to the ‘Edmonton Journal’ and co-hosting the ‘Cult of Hockey’ podcast alongside David Staples.

The heartbreaking news was shared by his son, Kevin McCurdy, who explained that Bruce was found unresponsive after suffering a medical emergency. Despite immediate medical attention from St. Albert Fire & Rescue and the staff at Sturgeon Hospital, he sadly passed away.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write,” Kevin shared in a statement. “Last night, shortly after the hockey game and after his last tweet, my father, Bruce McCurdy, suffered a medical emergency and became unresponsive. My family called 911, and every possible resuscitation effort was made. He was rushed to the hospital, but despite the dedicated efforts of the emergency responders and medical professionals, he did not survive.”

Kevin went on to express the immense grief his family is experiencing. “To say we are devastated is an understatement. We ask for privacy as we process this tremendous loss. We know that Bruce touched so many lives in various communities, and we will do our best to keep everyone updated on any next steps. Thank you for your understanding on behalf of myself and the rest of the McCurdy family. I love you, Dad, and I miss you more than words can express.”

McCurdy was a staple of Edmonton sports journalism, covering the Oilers for over a decade. He joined the ‘Edmonton Journal’ in 2010 and was also a contributor to SB Nation Oilers, earning a dedicated following through his in-depth analysis and passion for the game.

Beyond his contributions to sports journalism, McCurdy had a profound impact on the Edmonton community in other ways. He was deeply involved with the ‘Edmonton Telus World of Science’, where he dedicated over 30 years of service. His enthusiasm for astronomy paralleled his love for hockey, making him a respected and cherished figure in multiple circles.

His passing leaves a void in the hockey world and beyond. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
