Nick Saban Makes Bold Case for Alabama’s Playoff Spot Amid Strength of Schedule Debate
Despite three losses this season, former Alabama head coach and current ESPN analyst Nick Saban has firmly backed the Crimson Tide’s place in the College Football Playoff rankings. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Saban cited Alabama’s demanding schedule and marquee victories over top-15 opponents Georgia and South Carolina as critical reasons for their inclusion.
“I do think that strength of schedule, and what teams did you beat, how many good teams did you beat? I think that speaks volumes about what kind of team you’re capable of being,” Saban stated, emphasizing the importance of rewarding teams that tackle tough schedules.
Alabama’s position in the rankings—ahead of several two-loss programs such as Miami, Arizona State, and Iowa State—has sparked debate, especially as championship weekend approaches. With Texas, SMU, and Indiana sitting in the top 10 despite lacking wins over ranked opponents, Saban warned against setting a precedent that could discourage programs from scheduling challenging nonconference games.
“I don’t think we want to do anything in this playoff situation that’s going to enhance people not to play a tough schedule,” Saban said. “You want people to schedule some tough nonconference games… because you want good games. People want to see good games.”
As Texas and SMU prepare to face ranked opponents in their respective conference championships, and Indiana enters the playoff with no top-25 victories, Saban’s comments highlight a broader issue within the playoff selection process. The debate over balancing strength of schedule with win-loss records continues to shape the college football landscape, and Alabama’s case has become a focal point.
